Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behavior Therapy, often called DBT, is an evidence-based approach that helps people understand and manage intense emotions, build healthier relationships and create more balance in their everyday lives. At its core, DBT recognizes a simple truth. Life is complex. Two things can be true at the same time. You can be doing your best and still struggling. You can want change and still need compassion for where you are right now. The word “dialectical” reflects this balance. DBT focuses on holding acceptance and change together rather than choosing one over the other. It supports you in learning how to be present with your experience while also developing practical tools to move forward in ways that feel grounded and sustainable. DBT is skills-based and collaborative. Sessions focus on helping you understand your emotional responses, reduce reactivity and increase a sense of control and clarity in both internal experiences and relationships.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness skills help you slow down and become more aware of your thoughts, emotions and body without judgment. This awareness creates space to respond intentionally rather than reacting automatically.
Emotional Regulation
Emotion regulation skills focus on understanding emotions, reducing emotional intensity and building strategies to navigate overwhelming feelings without shutting down or becoming consumed by them.
Distress Tolerance
Distress tolerance skills support you in getting through difficult moments without making things worse. These tools help you cope with crisis, emotional pain or high stress in safer, more stabilizing ways.
Interpersonal Effectiveness
Interpersonal effectiveness skills focus on communication, boundaries and self respect. You learn how to ask for what you need, say no when necessary and maintain relationships without sacrificing yourself.
